BioID

Molecular Identification

Name every organism in your culture.

From €35/sample
FUNDÃO, PORTUGAL INDEPENDENT LABORATORY SOIL MICROBIOME

BioID is a DNA-barcoding service that identifies a single isolated microorganism. Send an already-isolated culture in a sterile Petri dish; we sequence one taxonomic barcode — ITS for fungi or 16S rRNA for bacteria — and return a presumptive identification at genus or species level in up to 8 working days, from €35 per sample.

It is built for agronomists, growers, plant-health labs and biotech teams who already have a colony in hand and need to know precisely what it is. For targeted molecular identification it pairs directly with PhytoTrace pathogen work; to read a whole soil or water community rather than a single isolate, see MetaInsight metabarcoding.

METHOD

DNA Barcoding from Pure Cultures

Send us your already-isolated microorganisms in sterile Petri dishes. We extract the DNA, amplify a single taxonomic barcode — ITS for fungi or 16S rRNA for bacteria — and send it for sequencing. The raw read is edited into a clean final sequence and compared against curated reference databases by homology, giving a presumptive identification at genus or species level.

Need to characterise an entire soil or water community instead of identifying isolates? See MetaInsight for environmental microbiome metabarcoding and shotgun metagenomics.

WHAT YOU GET
  • DNA quality control summary for the submitted culture
  • Presumptive identification (genus or species level) by homology against reference databases
  • Final edited DNA sequence file for your records
  • Per-sample pricing — submit as many isolates as you need
TURNAROUND 8 Working Days

From sample receipt at the laboratory to final report delivery

SAMPLE REQUIREMENTS 1+ Pure Cultures in Petri Dish

Ship sealed Petri dishes with the isolate. We do not accept raw soil for this service — see SoilCheck or MetaInsight.

SOIL MONITORING LAW

Where BioID Fits in Soil Monitoring

The EU Soil Monitoring Law (Directive (EU) 2025/2360) places the monitoring obligation on Member States, which must transpose it by 17 December 2028 and run their first measurements by 17 December 2030 on roughly six-year cycles. It is not a duty placed on individual farmers. For co-operatives, consultants and agencies running Soil Monitoring Law–aligned monitoring programmes, community-level methods are the core tool — MetaInsight metabarcoding and SoilCheck metabarcoding read whole bacterial and fungal communities.

BioID has a narrower, complementary role: when a monitoring programme isolates a single organism and needs it named with confidence, BioID provides that targeted molecular identification.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ITS and 16S?

ITS identifies fungi, 16S identifies bacteria. We run one barcode per organism — let us know which kingdom you want to identify when you submit the sample.

How do I send a sample?

Send already-isolated cultures in sterile Petri dishes. We extract the DNA, sequence the barcode, edit the raw read, and compare against reference databases.

How long do results take?

Up to 8 working days from sample receipt at the laboratory.

What is in the report?

A QC summary of the extracted DNA, a presumptive identification down to genus or species level, and the final edited DNA sequence for your records.

Ready to start?

Send us your samples, share your research question, or tell us about your project — we'll design the right analytical protocol.
